A title which follows the natural flow of ideas suggested by the Alexander Technique, showing how they extend to learning to swimming.
This is followed by an exploration of how we view and perform such activities as swimming, questioning contemporary notions of fitness.
The Art of Swimming, a new direction using the Alexander Technique Second Edition Steven Shaw and Armand D’Angour book review by Glenn Kenreich in AMSTAT Journal.
“The Art of Swimming made a sizeable splash in the Alexander Technique world when it first came out in 1996. This second edition is a more sophisticated version, handsomely redesigned with excellent colour photos. In spite of its spiffier new look the book covers essentially the same ground. However, Steven Shaw and Armand D‘Angour have added valuable suggestions for mastering strokes and placed greater emphasis on chapters awakening of Awareness‚ At Home in the Water‚ and The Art of Breathing‚ as a foundation for swimming. Throughout the book the authors develop the principles of the AT in relation to the art rather than the sport of swimming. They apply them to awareness in the water, learning to swim, and orientation and balance in the water. It may not be as good as having a lesson with Shaw but as an alternative and as a reminder of a new way to relate to the water, The Art of Swimming is first-rate.”
